Op 26 april 2019 komt Stay Around uit, een collectie nummers van JJ Cale die nooit eerder zijn uitgebracht. Het is het eerste nieuwe Cale album sinds Roll On, uit 2009. Stay Around is een postuum album, samengesteld door directe naasten van Cale: zijn weduwe, de muzikante Christine Lakeland Cale en zijn vriend en manager Mike Kappus.
Cale overleed in 2013 en het belang van zijn nalatenschap valt niet te betwisten. The New York Times omschreef hem als een “under-the-radar-giant”. Cale beïnvloedde niet de minste muzikanten. Zo schreef Neil Young in zijn biografie: “JJ’s guitar playing is a huge influence on me. His touch is unspeakable. I am stunned by it.” Beck sprak in de LA Times over zijn “effortlessness… restraint and underplaying.” En Eric Clapton schreef in zijn biografie: “one of the most important artists in the history of rock, quietly representing the greatest asset this country has ever had.”
Gezien de manier waarop JJ Cale schreef en werkte aan nummers is het geen verrassing dat Stay Around bestaat uit alleen maar nummers die onuitgebracht zijn. De nummers die hij schreef en die uiteindelijk niet op een album belandden, hield hij voor later. Zo was Roll on, de titeltrack van zijn laatste studioplaat uit 2009, liefst 34 jaar oud. Manager Mike Kappus: He would burn me CDs of demos, and one time I said, ‘You’ve got two good albums on here.’ Some of the tracks had detailed information, some of them had nothing. Some songs might be a full band of his buddies, others were him playing everything. These were songs he really did intend to do something with because they were carried to his typical level of production for release.”
Stay Around werd volledig geschreven door JJ Cale, op één nummer na: My Baby Blues, dat van de hand is van echtgenote Christine Lakeland Cale. Ze nam het al op met Cale in 1977, het jaar dat ze elkaar leerden kennen. Dat het nummer nu op deze plaat staat, maakt de cirkel rond voor haar. Over het samenstellen van de plaat zegt ze nog: “I wanted to find stuff that was completely unheard to max-out the ‘Cale factor’… using as much that came from John’s ears and fingers and his choices as I could, so I stuck to John’s mixes…You can make things so sterile that you take the human feel out. But John left a lot of that human feel in. He left so much room for interpretation.”
