The Old Kit Bag nieuw rustig
album van Richard Thompson
Het nieuwe studio-album van Richard Thompson ligt vanaf volgende week maandag in de winkels. "The Old Kit Bag" (COOKCD251) bevat 12 nieuwe songs. De Vlaamse VRT-radio 1 zendt maandag 3 februari in al haar programma's nummers van deze cd uit.
Richard Thompson zingt en speelt gitaar, dulcimer, accordeon, medoline en harmonium.
Danny Thompson is er op contrabas en Michael Jerome op drums. Judith Owen (ook al te gast op Thompson's vorige album Muck Tudor) is goed voor backing vocals op verschillende tracks.
De cd bevat over het algemeen rustig materiaal. Qua instrumentatie is het klein gehouden. Thompson: "The idea was to keep it small. I did do a few overdubs -- second guitar, dulcimer, single-finger keyboard parts, all the easy stuff -- but other than that, everything was pretty much a live performance."
De produktie was in handen van John Chelew (John Hiatt, Five Blind Boys of Alabama).
Over de titel van de cd The old kit Bag zegt Thompson: "It's a reference to the old World War I song, 'Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag,' which is about smiling and whistling a happy tune as the Germans rain shells down on you."

Kit Bag opens like a pocketbook filled with gems: images of innocence lost among tombstones on Gethsemane, of distant love remembered on A Love You Can't Survive, and demons unleashed by ignorance on Outside of the Inside, and lyrics -- war whoops and secrets under the trees, estuary smells coming up on the breeze, perfect, endless days like these -- that glitter and spill like diamonds over velvet.
Thompson was nog pas 17 toen hij Fairport Convention mede oprichtte. Met die band maakte hij folkrock, geen voor de hand liggende muziek voor zo'n jonge knaap. Hij heeft wat dat betreft altijd zijn eigen weg bewandeld. Hij zegt daarover: "I've always had a problem, growing up in London around a British folk tradition but also listening to rock and roll and not finding anyone who was playing the music I really wanted to hear. Really, what I wanted to hear didn't exist, so it was necessary for me to go out and create it."
Het woord concessies heeft gedurende zijn lange produktieve carrière niet gepast in zijn vocabulaire. Hij heeft altijd een eigenzinnige kijk gehad op muziek en op de handel eromheen:
"The major labels have been concentrating almost exclusively on Top 40, but now they're in crisis. The industry is changing. Different strata are appearing. Slowly but surely, audiences will find it easier to find the music they really want to hear".
