Patti Smith at ABC Amsterdam this Friday
ABC Amsterdam - Friday, July 6 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm
At the last minute, Patti Smith has graciously agreed to meet fans and sign her books on her day off in Amsterdam. American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist, Smith has just released a new album, Banga, as well as a memoir, Woolgathering. The American Book Center is pleased to welcome her on Friday July 6th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at their store in Amsterdam.
Published in 2010, her book, Just Kids , a memoir of her days in New York with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, was awarded a National Book Award. The first years they spent together in the late sixties were hungry and intimate, both kids driven to make pure art and to take care of each other. Mapplethorpe died young, his photographs and collages controversial and unapologetic. Smith wrote poetry and drew, was his model and muse and supported them both working in bookstores. Music came later after Sam Shepard and others encouraged her to read her poetry aloud.
Just Kids begins as a love story and ends as an elegy. A salute to New York city in the late sixties and seventies, the book is a prelude to the fame which Smith and Mapplethorpe obtained.
First published in 1992, Woolgathering is a small, luminous memoir in which Patti Smith revisits the most sacred experiences of her early years. The re-issue is augmented with her photographs and illustrations and includes a new autobiographical piece entitled Two Worlds.
Poet, songwriter, biographer, visual artist and musician, Smith is also a mother to Jackson and Jesse, from her marriage to the late Fred Sonic Smith. In 2005, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Smith the prestigious title of Commandeur Des Arts et des Lettres. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
Her European promotional tour includes a sold-out concert at Paradiso in Amsterdam
