De 80-jarige Joni Mitchell trad gisteravond voor het eerst op tijdens de uitreiking van de Grammy's en zij won ook de prijs voor Best Folk Album. Allison Russell (bekend van Po'Girl en Birds Of Chicago) zet een kroon op haar solocarrière met de winst van Best American Roots Performance voor het nummer Eve Was Black.
Naast de aandacht voor pop, rock en andere populaire muziekstijlen zijn er bij de jaarlijkse Grammy's ook altijd prijzen voor muziek in andere genres, zoals folk, country, blues en roots. De prijs voor Best Contemporary Instrumental Album ging bijvoorbeeld naar As We Speak, een project m.m.v. de veelzijdige banjovirtuoos Béla Fleck waarin Indiase en westerse klassieke muziek samenkomt met jazz en bluegrass. Chris Stapleton mocht Grammy's in ontvangst nemen voor Best Country Solo Performance en Best Country Song. In de categorie Best American Roots Performance viel Allison Russell in de prijzen met haar nummer Eve Was Black, zij had ook nominaties op zak voor Best Americana Performance, Best American Roots Song en Best Americana Album (met The Returner). Best Folk Album werd gewonnen door Live at Newport van Joni Mitchell. Het album bevat haar integrale optreden op het Newport Folk Festival in 2022, toen ze voor het eerst in jaren weer voor publiek zong, overigens met vocale ondersteuning van onder meer Brandi Carlisle, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford en Allison Russell.
